Personal Leadership in Supporting Others

When we sponsor someone into a role.

When we sense that they are unsure of themselves.

When we see that that they would benefit from our reassurance.

When we have been there and done that.

In a competitive world we might put our head down and let them sort it out. To focus on what we have in front of us.

Helping others, can help more than just them.

“The single biggest way to impact an organization is to focus on leadership development. There is almost no limit to the potential of an organization that recruits good people, raises them up as leaders and continually develops them.” John Maxwell

Supporting others can be brilliant, perhaps not always be appreciated. But it is a wonderful expression of our personal leadership. Frequently checking in, to see how they are doing and being available when they call. Giving tips how to better position themselves for success.

Zenger and Folkman talk about 7 things that work when helping others at work:

1. Inspire — perhaps helping to set and achieve an aspirational goal,

2. Notice issues — it is critical to see them before we can do anything about them,

3. Why Goals have been set and ensuring they are clear and well understood,

4. Being nimble when navigating old policies and procedures,

5. Trusting judgement, helping others make good decisions and share them with you,

6. Advocate courage and encourage taking on challenges, calling out the things done well,

7. Create and maintain momentum — focus on positive change.

Taking the opportunity to listen and be open to what is going on with colleagues, direct reports and peers.

Considering all that has happened in the last 12 months. We can see loneliness, depression, anxiety, and other mental health impacts that isolation and distancing has brought. Even in countries as fortunate as Australia and New Zealand.
